This is not a question of substances.
It is a question of the conditions under which a field can emerge.

This paper reverses the question:

1. Two Phases

水は極性を持つ。
油（炭化水素）は非極性である。

この差異は単なる性質ではない。

油 ＝ 分離（separation）

Water is polar.
Oil (hydrocarbons) is nonpolar.

This difference is not merely a property:

Water = connection (network)
Oil   = separation

世界は最初から二つの相に分かれている。
The world is already divided into two phases.

水においてHは結び目となり、油においてHは背景となる。

OH：Hは橋（結合を作る）
CH：Hは壁（結合を閉じる）

In water, H becomes a node.
In oil, H becomes background.

OH: H acts as a bridge (enabling bonds)
CH: H acts as a wall  (closing bonds)

Hは相をつなぐが、相を消さない。
H connects phases, but never dissolves them.

水と油が接するとき、そこには必ず境界（interface） が現れる。

When water and oil meet, an interface necessarily appears.

CHO systems generate flows:

COH = flow without orientation
    = gradient-driven, but history-free

これは代謝であって生命ではない。
This is metabolism, not yet life.

生命は要素の追加ではない。
それは位相の転換である。

Life is not an addition of elements.
It is a phase transformation.

Nは「情報」ではない。
履歴を残す不可逆な選択である。
戻れなさとして現れる偏りである。

N is not “information.”
It is irreversible selection that retains history.
A bias that cannot be undone.

Life did not emerge from water.
Nor did it emerge from oil.

Life emerged at their interface.
