Abstract

This paper proposes a fundamental reconfiguration of ontology based on the concept of encounter.
Rather than distinguishing life and matter as different kinds of entities, we define them as two modes of processing encounter.

Life is defined as the interface that continuously internalizes encounter.
Matter is defined as the structure that externally connects encounter.

The membrane is not a boundary separating inside and outside, but the operational interface through which encounter opens into these two modes.

This chapter repositions the concepts of membrane, ψ (persistence band), and internalization—previously developed in the Gφ-MEM series—within the HEG framework as a dual-mode structure of encounter.

0. Introduction — Reframing the Question

What distinguishes life from matter?

Conventional approaches attempt to answer this question by identifying intrinsic properties: metabolism, reproduction, or information processing.

This paper reverses the question:

How is encounter processed?

We argue that the distinction between life and matter does not lie in substance, but in the mode of processing encounter.

1. Encounter as the Primitive

All existence begins with encounter.

In the HEG framework:

Encounter is not an event added to pre-existing entities.
It is the generative condition from which both structure and persistence emerge.

2. The Membrane as Operational Interface

The membrane is traditionally understood as a boundary separating inside and outside.

This interpretation is insufficient.
