Four Modes of Life

— Encounter with the Other —

Abstract

This appendix develops a typology of life based on modes of encounter.

Life is not defined by movement, but by how it engages with the other.
Four fundamental modes are identified:

• flowing

• connecting

• moving

• waiting

These modes are not different kinds of life, but different ways in which encounter is realized.

0. Introduction — Beyond Animal-Centered Life

Life is often defined through animals:

• movement

• perception

• action

However, this perspective excludes plants, microorganisms, and dormant life forms.

We propose:

Life is not defined by movement.
It is defined by encounter.

1. Encounter as the Basis of Life

In HEG-17, life was defined as:

• folding (internalization of encounter)

• ψ (persistence)

Here, we extend this definition:

Life differs not in what it is,
but in how it encounters.

2. Four Modes of Encounter

(1) Flowing

Life that entrusts encounter to the environment.

• drifting organisms

• aquatic life forms

• plankton

(2) Connecting

Life that stabilizes encounter through attachment.

• plants

• rooted organisms

👉 encounter is maintained through connection

(3) Moving

Life that actively seeks encounter.

• animals

• mobile organisms

(4) Waiting

Life that suspends encounter.

• seeds

• spores

• dormant states

👉 encounter is held as potential

3. Structural Interpretation

These modes correspond to different ways of handling external connection:

• flow → delegated

• connection → fixed

• movement → acquired

• waiting → suspended

4. Not Categories, but Modes

These are not exclusive types.

A single organism may exhibit multiple modes:

• plants connect and grow

• animals move and sometimes wait

• seeds wait before connecting

Thus:

life is modal, not categorical.

5. Relation to Time

Each mode corresponds to a temporal relation:

• flowing → time is carried

• connecting → time is sustained

• moving → time is explored

• waiting → time is suspended

6. Repositioning Life

We now state:

Life is not defined by motion.
It is defined by modes of encounter.

Conclusion

Life unfolds in four modes:

• flowing

• connecting

• waiting

These are not different beings,
but different ways of meeting the world.
