生命を定義するNASA、生命を探すNASA、眠る生命を運ばないNASA
Working Definition, Life Detection, and Planetary Protection
Seed was our probe.
Spore was already NASA’s problem.
Prologue｜種子を置いたら、胞子が出てきた
PV-DN-02 では、一粒の休眠種子を三つの生命定義の前に置いた。
それはNASAが選んだ検体ではなかった。
われわれが置いた。
\[\boxed{ Dormant\ Seed }\]そしてNASA working definitionに対して、
\[\boxed{ Actual\ Activity\neq Capability }\]という監査線が現れた。PV-DN-02では、さらに capable が何を単位としているのかを問い、生命定義と個体の生死判定を区別した。
そこで止めた。
ところがNASAの別の坑道を掘ると、休眠はすでにそこにあった。
種子ではない。
胞子だった。
Planetary Protectionにとって、dormant sporeは抽象的な生命定義への反例ではない。
宇宙機に付着し、別の環境へ運ばれ、条件によっては再び活動しうるものとして、実際に管理される対象である。NASAのPlanetary Protection資料は、sporeをinactive/dormantなsurvival formとして扱い、viabilityやgerminationを実務上問題にしている。
そこで、問いを変える。

最初から「NASAには複数の生命概念がある」とは言わない。

Working Definitionでは、
Lifeをどう考えるか。
Life Detectionでは、
Lifeの存在を示す何を検出できるか。

したがって、最初の監査線を置く。

2｜Working Definition｜考えるための標識
NASAに広く帰属されるworking definitionは、
a self-sustaining chemical system capable of Darwinian evolution
である。
しかしGerald Joyce自身による成立史では、これはNASAのmissionsやinstrumentsを機械的に判定するofficial operational criterionとして作られたものではない。
Joyceはむしろ、この定義を思考を進めるための signpost として位置づけている。
したがって、
\[\boxed{ Working\ Definition \neq Operational\ Decision\ Rule }\]ここは重要である。
Working Definitionを、そのままNASAのあらゆる生命関連practiceへ適用すること自体が、こちら側の密輸になりうる。
そしてこのdefinitionで前景化するのは、

しかし、これらの語がNASAの別のpracticeでも同じ位置を占めるとは限らない。
3｜Life Detection｜定義の中心が測れない
Life Detectionへ移ると、語彙が変わる。
NASAのLife Detection Ladderでは、life as we know itに関係するfeaturesを、missionで利用可能なmeasurementsやbiosignaturesへ結びつけて評価する。
そこでは、
\[growth | metabolism | molecular\ components | complexity | biofabrics\]などが検討される。
そして興味深いことに、
\[\boxed{ Darwinian\ Evolution }\]はLadderの上位に位置しながら、mission constraintsのもとで直接測定することはpracticalではないとされる。
ここで、

Working Definitionの中心語を、そのままinstrumentで測ればよいわけではない。
Life-languageは、実際の探査では、
\[feature | biosignature | measurement | evidence | context\]へ展開される。
しかし、
\[\boxed{ Feature\neq Life }\] \[\boxed{ Measurement\neq Biosignature }\] \[\boxed{ Biosignature\neq Life }\]でもある。
Life Detectionは、Lifeそのものを直接掴むとは限らない。
Lifeについて何を測れば、Lifeの存在を問えるのか。
そこに別のpracticeがある。
4｜Planetary Protection｜見つける前に、運んでしまう
Planetary Protectionでは、問いがさらに変わる。
ここでは、未知生命を見つけることだけが問題ではない。
地球由来の生物学的materialを他天体へ持ち込むforward contaminationや、その逆方向のcontaminationを防ぐことが実務になる。
そして、この坑道に
\[\boxed{ Dormant\ Spore }\]がいる。
NASAのPlanetary Protection資料では、sporesはunfavorable conditionsをsurviveするinactive/dormant formsとして扱われ、条件が適切になればgerminationしてvegetative growthへ戻りうる。Planetary Protectionではこうしたsporesのviabilityやbioburdenが実務上重要になる。
ここで前景化する語は、

Working Definitionとは明らかに語彙の配置が違う。
しかし、もう一度。

別のことをしなければならない。
5｜Seed / Spore
ここでPV-DN-02へ戻る。
PV-DN-02で休眠種子を置いたのはわれわれだった。

\[\boxed{ Spore = Operational\ Problem }\]としてすでに休眠が現れていた。
したがって、

6｜Capability / Viability
ここで一つ、危険だが面白いPairingが現れる。
Working Definitionでは、

\[\boxed{ viable }\]が前景化する。
休眠を前にすると、この二語は近く見える。
しかし、
\[\boxed{ Capability \neq Viability }\]である。
capable of Darwinian evolution と、sporeがviableであることは、同じ概念ではない。
単位も違う可能性がある。
時間幅も違う。
判定方法も違う。
研究目的も違う。
したがって、ここでは統合しない。

7｜What Persists?へのOperational Response?
PV-DN-02は、Dormancy Testを通過して問いを変えた。

Planetary Protectionは、この問いへの哲学的回答を与えているわけではない。
しかし実務では、

そこで新しいProbeを置く。

8｜Practice leaves a Trace in Vocabulary?
三つの坑道を並べる。
Matrix Note
以下の表は、NASAにおける生命概念の分類表ではない。
それぞれの坑道で、どの語彙が前景化しているように見えるかを暫定的に記録したものである。

Working Definitionについて置いた thinking / defining? には、明示的に ? を残す。
Joyce自身がWorking Definitionを、思考のためのsignpostとして位置づけていることにはSource上の根拠がある。
しかし、そこからWorking Definitionというpractice全体を thinking や defining という一つの動詞へ還元することは、すでにこの監査側による解釈である。
一方、Life Detectionの detecting とPlanetary Protectionの preventing contamination は、それぞれの資料が明示するoperational taskにより近い。
ただし、これらもNASA自身が提示したpracticeの定義ではなく、本稿が監査のために置いた短縮ラベルである。
したがって、

Status Note
ここでいう Audit は、このDevelopment Noteにおける区別の方法論上のstatusを示す。
一方、source-supported は独立したstatus categoryではない。
それは、その監査線が今回の比較によってのみ生成されたものではなく、検討したhistorical / operational sourceによって直接支えられていることを記録するevidential noteである。
したがって、

PV-DN-02では、一粒の種子を置いた。
その種子は、われわれが選んだ。
NASA working definitionを休眠という状況に置けば、何が露出するのかを見たかった。
そして、
\[Actual\ Activity \neq Capability\]が現れた。
しかしNASAの別の坑道を開くと、NASA自身もすでに休眠する生命を扱っていた。
それは種子ではなかった。
胞子だった。
しかも、そこで使われていた中心語は、
\[capable\]ではなく、
\[viable\]だった。
この違いは、まだ説明しない。
ただ記録する。
生命を考えるとき。
生命を探すとき。
生命を運ばないようにするとき。
同じinstitutionの中でも、Life-languageは同じ姿をしていない。
だから、この稿が残す問いは、
