Scaffolding Life — A Provisional TUP Definition for Simultaneous Audit
This definition is built to be audited.
It is not built to survive the audit.
0|Status Note
Principia Vita v0.2 withheld a Fundamental Definition of Life.
This Development Note does not withdraw that withholding.
It does something different.
It constructs a provisional definition as an analytical scaffold for a subsequent simultaneous audit of three approaches to life:
\[NASA \;|\; Autopoiesis \;|\; TUP_{\rm provisional}\]The third term is missing unless it is explicitly constructed.
TUP cannot remain outside the comparison as an auditor while NASA and Autopoiesis alone are placed under examination.
It must also become a specimen.
Therefore:
\[\boxed{ Provisional\ Definition \neq Fundamental\ Definition }\]and:
\[\boxed{ Provisional\ Definition = Audit\ Scaffold }\]The purpose of this scaffold is not to survive unchanged.
Its purpose is to become inspectable, comparable, revisable, and—if necessary—breakable.
1|Why build a definition after withholding one?
There is an apparent tension.
Principia Vita v0.2 ended with:
\[\boxed{ Fundamental\ Definition | Withheld }\]Why, immediately afterward, construct another definition?
Because withholding a fundamental definition does not prohibit the construction of a provisional one.
The two have different statuses and different functions.
A Fundamental Definition would claim, or at least strongly propose, what Life is.
The present definition asks instead:
What happens if TUP is forced into definitional form?
This is an experimental move.
\[\boxed{ Definition_{\rm provisional} \neq Conclusion }\]The definition is therefore not the destination of the inquiry.
It is an object placed in the path of the inquiry.
A scaffold.
A test piece.
A body for examination.
2|The Minimum Scaffold
The first version should contain as little as possible.
This minimum is not neutral.
Trace-Updating Practice was not generated here by comparing all possible candidate terms and selecting the smallest sufficient set. The phrase already existed as TUP before this provisional definition was constructed.
The scaffold therefore inherits a naming history.
\[\boxed{ Minimal\ Scaffold \neq Neutral\ Minimum }\]Its apparent compactness may partly result from fitting the provisional definition to an inherited name.
\[\boxed{ TUP_{\rm inherited} \neq TUP_{\rm established} }\]This constraint is not eliminated.
It is recorded as part of the scaffold to be audited.
The aim here is therefore not to claim that Trace, Updating, and Practice are the three minimal components of Life.
It is to make an inherited TUP vocabulary explicit enough to become examinable.
Not because minimality guarantees truth.
It does not.
But every additional term introduces another commitment before the comparative audit has begun.
For the moment, therefore, do not add:
\[Self\] \[Boundary\] \[Maintenance\] \[Metabolism\] \[Reproduction\] \[Evolution\] \[Autonomy\] \[Hunger\]or:
\[Next\]None of these is rejected.
They are simply not installed in the first scaffold.
The minimum provisional definition is:
\[\boxed{ \textbf{Life is a Trace-Updating Practice.} }\]Or, with its present uncertainty left visible:
\[\boxed{ Life? = Trace\text{-}Updating\ Practice? }\]Status: PROVISIONAL DEFINITION / AUDIT SCAFFOLD
This is the third specimen.
Now it must undergo examination.
3|First Audit: Trace?
The first imported term is Trace.
It does not arrive neutrally.
TUP has already used Trace in the working sense:
\[\boxed{ Trace? = a\ difference\ that\ can\ affect\ another\ relation }\]But this vocabulary belongs to the history of TUP.
Its presence here does not establish that Life is naturally or fundamentally organized around something called Trace.
\[\boxed{ TUP\ Vocabulary \neq Natural\ Vocabulary }\]Nor should Trace silently become:
\[Memory\]or:
\[Information\]or:
\[Sequence\]or:
\[Material\ Retention\]The previous excavation has already made such identifications unsafe.
The question is therefore not:
Does life contain Trace?
but:
What work does Trace perform when TUP attempts to define Life?
And immediately:
\[\boxed{ Can\ non\text{-}life\ Trace? }\]If the answer is yes, Trace alone cannot distinguish Life from non-life.
If the answer is no, the reason cannot simply be that Trace was defined as a property of Life.
That would close the inquiry by definition.
So Trace remains under audit.
4|Second Audit: Updating?
The second term may be even more dangerous.
\[\boxed{Updating?}\]Previous protocell inquiry exposed:
\[\boxed{ Change \neq Update? }\]Something can change without the inquiry having established that something was updated.
And the moment Updating is used, another question appears:
\[\boxed{ Update\ of\ WHAT? }\]A molecule?
A relation?
A structure?
A system?
A lineage?
A This?
A Trace?
Life?
None is supplied here as the answer.
Likewise:
\[\boxed{ Internal\ to\ WHAT? \neq Update\ of\ WHAT? }\]A boundary does not automatically solve the problem.
A compartment does not automatically identify the WHAT.
A persistent identity cannot simply be assumed.
Thus the middle term of Trace-Updating Practice is not an explanatory solution.
It is itself a Problema.
\[\boxed{ Updating? | Under\ Audit }\]5|Third Audit: Practice?
The third term may carry the most unnoticed baggage.
\[\boxed{Practice?}\]Practice can suggest repetition.
Organization.
Agency.
Habit.
Direction.
Selection.
A practitioner.
Perhaps even:
\[FOR?\]It may therefore smuggle into the provisional definition precisely what the previous inquiry tried not to assume.
Who—or what—practices?
Does Practice require a Self?
Does it require repetition?
Does it require organization?
Can matter practice?
Can a chemical reaction practice?
Can a dormant seed practice while dormant?
If Practice already presupposes Life, then:
\[Life = Trace\text{-}Updating\ Practice\]would become circular.
Therefore:
\[\boxed{ Practice? | Under\ Audit }\]The provisional definition now looks less like a definition than when it was first written.
Good.
That is part of its function.
6|Working Expansion
The minimum scaffold requires enough expansion to become inspectable.
A provisional working expansion may therefore be written:
A Trace-Updating Practice is provisionally used here to indicate a process in which differences arising in relations can become relevant to other relations, without yet specifying a persistent self, fixed boundary, material identity, or predetermined destination.
This sentence is not an improved definition.
It is an unpacking of the scaffold.
Each phrase remains inspectable.
process?
differences?
relations?
become relevant?
other relations?
Even the exclusions carry risks.
To say that a persistent self or fixed boundary is not yet specified does not establish that Life lacks either.
\[\boxed{ Not\ Specified \neq Absent }\]This distinction must remain explicit.
7|What the scaffold does not yet contain
The provisional definition deliberately does not install several features commonly attracted to discussions of life.
It does not yet require:
\[Self?\] \[Boundary?\] \[Metabolism?\] \[Reproduction?\] \[Evolution?\] \[Homeostasis?\] \[Autonomy?\]This is not a claim that these are unnecessary for Life.
\[\boxed{ Not\ Included \neq Not\ Required }\]Their absence from the minimum scaffold serves a methodological purpose.
They remain available as questions that can be brought back by the audit.
This matters especially because the next inquiry will place the TUP scaffold beside definitions or theories that may explicitly foreground some of these terms.
The comparison must be allowed to expose their significance rather than having that significance written into TUP in advance.
8|The scaffold meets Principia Vita v0.2
The provisional definition must also face the Problemata already exposed by Principia Vita v0.2.
Can:
\[Life? = Trace\text{-}Updating\ Practice?\]say anything useful about:
\[THIS?\] \[Ingestion?\] \[Editing?\] \[Excretion?\] \[Hunger?\] \[Absent?\] \[Latency?\] \[AGAIN?\] \[NEVER\ RETURN?\] \[FOR?\] \[Next?\]At present, the answer is not known.
The definition must not be expanded merely to absorb every Problema.
That would make it unfalsifiably accommodating.
Instead, the mismatch itself should be recorded.
\[\boxed{ Problema\ not\ captured \neq Problema\ solved }\]A useful scaffold may expose what it cannot support.
9|Failure and Revision Probes
The provisional definition is therefore accompanied by tools for its own dismantling.
Probe A
\[\boxed{ Can\ non\text{-}life\ satisfy\ this\ definition? }\]If yes, does the definition fail to discriminate Life?
Or was discrimination never the only work expected from a definition?
Probe B
\[\boxed{ Can\ Life\ fail\ to\ satisfy\ this\ definition? }\]Dormancy and latency may become especially important here.
Probe C
\[\boxed{ Does\ Trace\ secretly\ require\ Memory? }\]If so, what counts as memory?
Probe D
\[\boxed{ Does\ Updating\ secretly\ require\ a\ WHAT? }\]If so, can that WHAT be specified without smuggling in persistent identity?
Probe E
\[\boxed{ Does\ Practice\ secretly\ require\ a\ Self? }\]If so, the minimum scaffold may already contain what it claims not to specify.
Probe F
\[\boxed{ Does\ TUP\ require\ a\ Boundary? }\]If yes, what kind?
Material?
Operational?
Relational?
Observed?
Probe G
\[\boxed{ Can\ the\ scaffold\ distinguish\ Dormancy\ from\ Death? }\]If not, latency remains outside its reach.
Probe H
\[\boxed{ What\ happens\ to\ Hunger,\ Rejection,\ and\ Excretion? }\]Can TUP describe absence, refusal, and release without reducing them to generic difference?
Probe I
\[\boxed{ Does\ TUP\ smuggle\ in\ FOR?\ or\ Next? }\]Does Updating already imply a direction?
Does Practice imply something to be continued?
Does Trace imply a later relation?
These questions remain open.
10|The Coming Simultaneous Audit
The scaffold is being built for a specific next inquiry.
Three specimens will be placed under examination:
\[\boxed{ NASA \;|\; Autopoiesis \;|\; TUP_{\rm provisional} }\]No one of the three will serve as the neutral ground for judging the others.
\[\boxed{ Comparison \neq Competition }\]NASA will not be treated in advance as the scientific standard.
Autopoiesis will not be treated in advance as the theoretical standard.
TUP will not remain outside the examination as the auditing vocabulary.
Each must be asked comparable questions.
For example:
\[What\ is\ the\ unit?\] \[What\ persists?\] \[What\ changes?\] \[What\ is\ maintained?\] \[Where\ is\ the\ boundary?\] \[What\ is\ internal?\] \[What\ reproduces?\] \[What\ makes\ a\ self\ self?\] \[What\ does\ the\ definition\ require\ from\ time?\] \[What\ can\ be\ absent?\] \[What\ does\ the\ definition\ make\ visible?\] \[What\ does\ it\ make\ difficult\ to\ see?\]But even this list cannot be treated as neutral.
The audit matrix is also constructed.
\[\boxed{ Comparison\ Matrix \neq Neutral\ Ground }\]Questions exposed by one specimen may therefore alter the questions asked of the other two.
The audit itself may update.
The first comparison matrix above is itself historically situated.
Many of its questions emerged from the TUP inquiry that preceded this note. If that matrix alone were used, NASA and Autopoiesis would already be entering an audit partly structured by TUP-derived questions.
A simultaneous audit therefore cannot stop with one common matrix.
Each specimen must also be allowed to become a source from which audit questions are constructed.
\[\boxed{ M_{\rm TUP} | M_{\rm NASA} | M_{\rm Autopoiesis} }\]Questions arising from TUP will be asked, where applicable, of NASA, Autopoiesis, and TUP itself.
Questions constructed from NASA’s own definitional vocabulary, distinctions, and commitments will likewise be brought to all three.
Questions constructed from the vocabulary, distinctions, and commitments of Autopoiesis will do the same.
\[\boxed{ Each\ Specimen \rightarrow? Audit\ Questions }\]The question mark matters.
A specimen does not literally ask questions. The inquiry constructs questions from the vocabulary, distinctions, and commitments exposed by that specimen.
The resulting matrices need not be symmetrical.
That asymmetry should not be corrected in advance merely to produce a cleaner comparison.
\[\boxed{ Simultaneous\ Audit \neq Symmetrical\ Audit }\]Some questions may arise only from NASA.
Some may arise only from Autopoiesis.
Some may expose difficulties peculiar to TUP.
Where questions can travel across the three specimens, they should be allowed to travel. Where they cannot, that difference should also be recorded.
The asymmetry is not noise to be removed.
It is another trace of the audit.
11|What does each definition put first?
The simultaneous audit may eventually expose a deeper problem.
A definition does not merely include and exclude phenomena.
It may privilege a particular kind of continuity, organization, process, boundary, or relation.
The question may therefore become:
\[\boxed{ What\ does\ each\ definition\ put\ first? }\]NASA may place certain requirements in the foreground.
Autopoiesis may place others.
TUP has already placed Trace, Updating, and Practice in the foreground merely by constructing this scaffold.
That choice must not disappear behind the apparent simplicity of the sentence.
\[\boxed{ Life\ is\ a\ Trace\text{-}Updating\ Practice. }\]The sentence is not neutral.
It is a move.
And:
\[\boxed{ Move \neq Derivation }\]12|Development Status
For now:
\[\boxed{ Life? = Trace\text{-}Updating\ Practice? }\]remains:
\[\boxed{ PROVISIONAL\ DEFINITION | AUDIT\ SCAFFOLD }\]Its three principal terms remain:
\[\boxed{ Trace? | Updating? | Practice? }\]and each remains under audit.
The scaffold may survive partly.
It may be revised.
It may split into several definitions.
It may prove too broad.
It may prove too narrow.
It may expose that the question itself was badly formed.
None of these outcomes is excluded.
Because:
\[\boxed{ Audit \neq Defense }\]Conclusion|Build it so it can break
Principia Vita v0.2 withheld a Fundamental Definition.
This Development Note does not fill that vacancy.
It builds something temporary in front of it.
A scaffold.
The scaffold allows TUP to stop behaving as the invisible language of the auditor and become visible as a third specimen.
Only then can the proposed simultaneous audit begin.
\[NASA \;|\; Autopoiesis \;|\; TUP_{\rm provisional}\]Three definitions—or perhaps three different kinds of attempts to define Life.
That difference itself remains to be examined.
For now, one provisional sentence is enough:
\[\boxed{ \textbf{Life is a Trace-Updating Practice.} }\]Not because it has been established.
Because it can now be attacked.
\[\boxed{ Fundamental\ Definition | Still\ Withheld }\]This definition is built to be audited.
It is not built to survive the audit.
