Orientation, Bias, Êthos, and the Exposure of Support

0. Introduction

This paper addresses the following question:

Not how value is determined,
but how value is generated.

Conventional approaches treat value as the outcome of decision, judgment, or structural determination. This paper rejects all three assumptions.

Value is not decided.
Value is not judged.
Value is not reducible to structure.

Instead:

Value is generated.

To articulate this process, the paper distinguishes five analytical layers:

These layers do not form a continuous chain but a stepped generative sequence. The central methodological principle is to preserve the discontinuities between them, rather than collapsing them into a single explanatory framework.

I. Orientation: Asymmetry as the Origin of Life

The analysis begins not from the market, but from orientation.

Orientation is defined as an asymmetric response arising from the non-coincidence between event (ΔR) and embodiment (ΔZ). Events do not fully coincide with the body; this gap generates orientation.

Orientation precedes judgment, language, and meaning. It is the pre-reflective condition under which life responds to events.

This response does not occur in isolation. It arises within a milieu, understood not as an abstract environment but as a concrete ensemble of conditions that enable orientation. These include spatial configuration, sensory inputs, temporal dynamics, and the presence of others.

Thus:

Life persists by turning.

Orientation is the minimal condition of persistence.

II. Bias: Distribution as the Formation of the Social

Orientation does not remain singular. Multiple orientations emerge in relation to the same event and encounter one another. From this encounter arises bias.

Bias is not error, nor is it a cognitive distortion. It is the distribution of orientations.

Through processes of amplification, repetition, and stabilization, orientations form a distribution that persists over time. This process can be described as fictional stabilization, where “fiction” refers not to falsity but to the formation of stable, shareable meaning structures.

III. Êthos: Persistence and the Emergence of Value

When bias is repeated over time, it acquires viscosity. This persistence is termed êthos.

Êthos is defined as the state in which distributed bias no longer disperses but stabilizes and sustains itself.

It is at this stage that value emerges. However, value is not the result of selection or evaluation.

Value is what remains.

Repetition produces viscosity, and viscosity produces normativity. Statements such as “this should be preserved” or “this must be remembered” indicate that êthos has already formed.

Value is therefore not chosen; it persists.

IV. Support: The Conditions of Generation and Their Disappearance

As value stabilizes, the conditions that enabled its generation recede from visibility. These conditions are termed support.

Support refers to the ensemble of generative conditions.
Background is the perceptual form of support.

Crucially:

Support is not inherently invisible.
It becomes invisible.

This occurs because the figure (ΔZ) is emphasized while support is retained as ground.

Moreover, support is not static. It operates dynamically as a rate, organizing and binding relations.

Thus:

Background is the perceptual form of support as rate.

Value depends on support, but as support becomes backgrounded, it is no longer directly perceived.

IV’. Market: The Distribution of Lag

The market does not determine value.

The market is the distribution of lag.

Because orientations do not coincide, lag emerges. These lags distribute, persist, and fluctuate across multiple agents and temporalities.

Price is not the origin of value but its expression:

Price is a cross-section of lag distribution.

This allows a redefinition of key market concepts:

The market does not converge toward equilibrium. It is a field in which lag persists.

V. Case Study: The Home Run Ball

This framework can be illustrated through the case of a historically significant home run ball by Shohei Ohtani.

At the moment of the event, bodies orient: gaze converges, hands extend. At this stage, there is no value.

Subsequently, multiple orientations encounter one another, forming bias. Media coverage, record-keeping, and perceived rarity amplify this distribution.

As bias persists, êthos emerges. Normative statements such as “this should be preserved” appear, indicating the stabilization of value.

At this point, support—such as institutional validation, authentication systems, cultural narratives, and market infrastructure—recedes into the background.

The market does not generate value but renders it visible in numerical form.

Conclusion

The home run ball does not become valuable.

Life turns.
Bias distributes.
Êthos persists.
Support recedes.

The market reflects this process.

Value arises where support becomes invisible.

Value is not a property of objects.
It is the trace of a generative process.

価値は選択によって生まれる。
価値は市場によって形成される。

しかし、これらはいずれも結果の記述であって、生成の説明ではない。

本書は、この前提をいったん退けるところから始める。

価値はいかに決まるか、ではない。
価値はいかに生成されるか。

この問いのもとで、本章では価値を、向き・偏り・拘り・支え・市場という五つの層に分解し、段差を保ったまま記述する。

重要なのは、それらを連続的に説明しないことである。
価値は滑らかに連なっているのではなく、ずれと跳躍を伴いながら立ち上がる。

第一章｜向き──生命はどこへ向くのか

出発点は市場ではない。
生命である。

より正確に言えば、生命の向きである。

私たちは出来事に出会うとき、まず判断するのではない。
身体が先に動く。
視線が向き、音に反応し、手が伸びる。

このとき、出来事は身体と一致していない。
そこにはわずかな遅れ、ずれがある。

このずれこそが、向きを生む。

向きとは、出来事（ΔR）と身体（ΔZ）の非一致から生じる、非対称的な応答である。

それは意味以前の現象であり、言語化される前の運動である。

そしてこの向きは、決して孤立して生じるものではない。
常にmilieu（場） のなかで発生する。

球場であれば、観客席の配置、音の反響、光の方向、他者の気配、時間の緊張が、すべて向きを形成する条件となる。

したがって、

生命は、向くことによって持続する。

価値の問題は、この地点から始めなければならない。

第二章｜偏り──なぜ分布は生まれるのか

向きは単独では留まらない。
同じ出来事に対して、複数の生命が同時に向く。

ここで起きるのは、単なる並列ではない。
遭遇と増幅である。

視線が集まり、反応が重なり、注意が集中する。
このとき、ある方向に分布が生まれる。

これが偏りである。

偏りという言葉はしばしば否定的に用いられるが、ここではそうではない。

偏りとは、

向きの分布そのものである。

それは誤りではなく、むしろ社会の最小単位である。

この分布は時間の中で持続し、反復されることで安定化する。
その過程で、記録や言語、制度といった形をとるようになる。

ここで初めて、

この段階で現れるのが、troubleとissueの分化である。

出来事のただ中にある緊張はtroubleとして存在し、それが言語や制度に回収されるとissueとなる。

両者は対立するのではない。
ずれたまま循環する。

第三章｜拘り──なぜ価値は残るのか

偏りは、時間の中で変化し続ける。
しかしあるものは消えず、残る。

この「残る」という性質が、拘りである。

拘りとは、

分布が離れなくなった状態

である。

それは単なる執着ではない。
繰り返されることで粘性を持ち、自己を維持し続ける構文である。

ここで価値が現れる。

しかし、それは選ばれた結果ではない。

価値とは、残るものである。

あるものが繰り返し現れ、語られ、保持されるとき、そこにはすでに価値が生じている。

「保存されるべきだ」という言葉は、価値を生むのではなく、価値が生じたことの徴候である。

第四章｜支え──なぜそれは見えなくなるのか

価値が安定すると、それを支えていた条件は視界から退く。

これが支え（support）である。

支えとは、価値を成立させる条件の束である。
そして背景とは、その知覚形態である。

ここで重要なのは、

支えは見えないのではない。
見えなくなる。

という点である。

私たちは、価値そのもの──つまり結果──に注目する。
そのとき、それを支えている条件は地として保持され、同時に不可視化される。

さらに、この支えは静的なものではない。
それは関係を束ねるrate（比率・密度） として働く。

つまり背景とは、

支えが働いた結果として知覚される形式

である。

第五章｜市場──ずれはどのように可視化されるか

ここで初めて市場が現れる。

しかし市場は出発点ではない。
終点でもない。

それは、

生成の露出面である。

市場とは何か。

それは価値を決める場所ではない。
ずれ（lag）の分布である。

生命の向きは一致しない。
それぞれ異なるタイミングと強度で動く。

そこにlagが生じる。

このlagは分布し、持続し、変動する。
その一断面として、価格が現れる。

したがって、

市場は均衡しない。
それは、ずれが持続する場である。

第六章｜ホームランボール──価値はどのように立ち上がるのか

では、この構造はどのように現実に現れるのか。

例として、大谷翔平のホームランボールを考える。

打球が放たれた瞬間、観客の身体が動く。
視線が集まり、手が伸びる。

ここにはまだ価値はない。

次に、複数の向きが重なり、偏りが生じる。
メディアが報じ、記録が付与され、希少性が語られる。

偏りは持続し、拘りとなる。
「これは特別なボールである」という認識が定着する。

このとき、それを支えている制度や文化は背景へ退く。

市場は、その結果を価格として示す。
