— Why the Issue–Trouble Schema Matters

The unfinished Mills is a problem of syntax, not theory.

Prologue

C. Wright Mills sought to grasp society not as structure, but as movement of relations.

Yet his project remained unfinished.

This paper examines both the limit and the opening of that attempt.

1｜Character and Role

Mills attempted to describe social structure through character and role.

Yet the movement tends to be captured as structure.

Movement is absorbed into character.

Relation becomes substance.

2｜The Power Elite and Fixation

Mills described power as a dynamic configuration.

However, the term “elite” stabilizes that movement.

Naming fixes what moves.

Even here, relation is drawn back into form.

3｜Toward Cultural Apparatus

Mills moved toward an analysis of perception through media and cultural filters.

This direction reveals forces that shape relation.

Yet it risks becoming another structure.

Apparatus can become substance again.

4｜The Missing Semiotics

What is lacking here is a language that can hold movement.

The reason lies in its syntax.

ΔR is not eliminated.

Unlike other frameworks, movement is not absorbed into structure.

Most relational theories fail at a crucial point:

relation becomes substance.

Reification can thus be reformulated:

Reification is the operation by which
non-closed relation (ΔR) is forced into stabilization (ΔZ) through syntax.

The problem is not relation itself.

It is the syntax that closes it.

Conclusion

Mills grasped relational movement.

Yet he lacked a language capable of sustaining it.

The unfinished nature of Mills is not a lack of theory, but a lack of syntax.

Mills discovered a relational movement, but did not formalize the syntax that sustains it.

HEG-16 “Why Does Support Become Invisible?” syntactically demonstrates that the distortion of the trouble–issue relation arises from the asymmetry of the ΔR–ΔZ circulation and from structure as invisible support.

しかしこの方向は、新たな固定へと向かう可能性を持つ。

装置は、再び構造となりうる。

4｜セミオティクスの未完

ここに欠けていたのは、関係を保持する言語である。

関係は、記述されると固定される。

しかし、それを解決するセミオティクスは、確立されなかった。

個人と社会という二項対立を超えるために、多くの理論が relational な枠組みを採用した。

しかし、それにもかかわらず、関係は最終的に構造として固定される。

関係は、なぜ物象化されるのか。

本稿は、この問いに対して、ある例外的構文から接近する。

1｜関係はなぜ固まるのか

関係は運動である。

しかし、それが記述された瞬間、安定した形式へと回収される。

関係は、書かれた瞬間に構造となる。

これが物象化である。

2｜relational から substantial へ

多くの理論は relational に出発する。

しかしそれらは、最終的に安定した形式として再出現する。

関係は、形となる。

3｜ミルズの構文

C. Wright Mills の提示した構文は異なる。

issue ⇄ trouble

この構文は、固定されない。

閉じない関係がここにある。

4｜なぜ閉じないのか

その理由は、構文にある。

ΔR ⇄ ΔZ

ΔRが消えない

通常の理論では、ΔRはΔZへ回収される。

しかしこの構文では、ΔRが保持される。

5｜言語の罠をすり抜ける

言語は本来、安定化を志向する。

それがΔZの檻である。

しかし、issue⇄trouble構文は、この檻に完全には回収されない。

書かれても、止まらない。

関係が物象化されるのは、関係そのものの問題ではない。

関係を閉じる構文の問題である。

issue⇄trouble論は、この閉包を回避する稀な構文である。

issue⇄troubleとは、閉じない関係構文である。
