The Otherness Turn in Update Ontology
The Structural Ground of Space and Time
1. The Problem
Update Ontology begins from a simple thesis:
Being is update.
Yet one question remained unresolved:
Where do space and time come from?
If time is presupposed, update is easily described.
But can time be derived from update itself?
This paper argues that it can.
The key is otherness.
2. Fundamental Premises
-
Update is always relational.
There is no isolated being; singularity is only a relational phase approximation. -
Non-identity with the Other produces non-coincidence.
This non-coincidental differentiation is the structural condition of space. -
Lag is the minimal non-erasable difference generated by relational non-closure.
3. The Primacy of Space
Let self and other be denoted by $S$ and $O$.
If
\[S \neq O\]then difference cannot collapse.
Spatiality emerges as the structural mode of this non-coincidental differentiation.
Space is the syntactic mode of relational differentiation.
Space is not a background container.
It is the expression of structural non-identity.
4. Minimal Proof of Irreversibility
Define update as:
\[U : (S, O) \mapsto S'\]Given non-identity, we have:
\[S' = S + \Delta, \quad \Delta \neq 0\]where $\Delta$ denotes lag — the non-erasable residual.
If update were reversible, there would exist:
\[U^{-1} \text{ such that } U^{-1}(S') = S\]However, since ( \Delta ) cannot be eliminated,
\[U^{-1} \nexists\]Thus update is structurally irreversible.
5. The Derivation of Time
Define retained lag as:
\[\Psi := \Delta\]Time is not a pre-existing dimension.
Time is:
The structural asymmetry produced by retained lag.
Compressed:
\[S \neq O \Rightarrow \Delta \neq 0 \Rightarrow U^{-1} \nexists \Rightarrow T = \Delta\]Time is the consequence of non-closure.
6. Phenomenological Correspondence
The self is not static; it is cumulative update:
\[S_n = S_0 + \sum_{k=0}^{n-1} \Delta_k\]The self is sedimented lag.
Irreversibility is felt when prior states cannot be reconstructed.
Thus:
Time is the persistence of unresolved encounter.
More precisely:
Time is the condition in which encounter with the Other remains unclosed.
7. Conclusion
-
Space arises from relational differentiation.
-
Lag arises from non-closure.
-
Time arises from retained lag.
Time is not a cosmic flow.
It is the structural trace of unfinished relation.
