HEG-18|Where is Time? — Social ψ as shared symbols —

Social ψ — Persistence and Maintenance
— The Externalization of Time —
Abstract
This section defines Social ψ as the structure through which time, generated by folding, is externally maintained.
Unlike biological ψ, which persists internally, Social ψ requires active maintenance through repeated inscription, reference, and renewal.
When maintenance ceases, Social ψ does not collapse into matter.
Instead, it decays into residual traces.
Thus, Social ψ introduces a new asymmetry within the modes of encounter: persistence versus maintenance.
0. Introduction — From Generation to Maintenance
In HEG-17, time was shown to emerge through folding and persistence (ψ).
However, in human society, time appears as something external and objective.
This section addresses the shift:
from internally generated time
to externally maintained time.
1. Definition of Social ψ
Definition:
Social ψ is the structure in which time, generated through folding, is externalized and maintained as shared symbols.
This includes:
-
calendars
-
anniversaries
-
historical records
-
timestamps
These are not time itself.
👉 They are maintained inscriptions of time.
2. Persistence vs Maintenance
A fundamental asymmetry emerges:
-
biological ψ → persistence
-
social ψ → maintenance
Thus:
Life persists.
Society is maintained.
3. The Necessity of Maintenance
Social ψ does not sustain itself.
It requires:
-
repetition
-
recognition
-
updating
-
participation
Without these:
👉 it ceases to function as time
4. Failure Modes
Failure differs between life and society:
-
life → collapse (loss of folding)
-
society → oblivion (loss of maintenance)
Thus:
collapse vs oblivion
5. Residualization of Social ψ
— When Maintenance Ceases —
When Social ψ is no longer maintained:
-
inscriptions remain
-
symbols persist
-
traces (ΔZ) are still present
However:
-
no one refers to them
-
no updates occur
-
no shared recognition exists
Thus:
Social ψ decays into residual traces.
6. Residual Traces (ΔZ)
Residual traces are:
-
preserved but inactive
-
existent but non-operative
Examples:
-
unread monuments
-
forgotten records
-
abandoned archives
Thus:
what remains is not time, but trace.
7. Criterion of Social ψ
We can now define a criterion:
Social ψ exists only where maintenance is active.
Thus:
-
active → Social ψ
-
fragile → weakening Social ψ
-
residual → no Social ψ (only ΔZ)
8. Non-Equivalence with Death
Unlike life:
- life → death → matter
Social ψ does not “die.”
Instead:
👉 it is forgotten
9. Repositioning Time
We now state:
Time is not merely generated.
It must be maintained.
Conclusion
Social ψ is the maintenance of time.
Without maintenance:
-
time does not persist
-
only traces remain
Thus:
Time is generated by persistence
and stabilized by maintenance.

👉 Life persists. Society is maintained.
👉 collapse vs oblivion
