ψ as Temporal Syntax (Extended)
— Persistence and Latency —
Abstract
This update completes the definition of ψ as temporal syntax.
The definition of time remains unchanged:
time = persistence(lag)
However, ψ is not limited to active persistence.
It also includes latent suspension.
Thus, ψ is redefined as the condition in which difference is sustained either through ongoing change or through preserved potential.
0. Introduction — Completion, Not Revision
The definition of time was already complete.
Time is the persistence of difference.
What remained incomplete was the definition of ψ.
1. TS-Core v1 Recap
The core formulation was:
lag = ΔR → ΔZ
time = persistence(lag)
ψ was defined as the condition under which differential traces continue to change:
∂(ΔZ) ≠ 0 is sustained
Thus, persistence was identified with continuous change.
2. The Limitation of v1
This formulation assumes:
👉 persistence = continuous variation
However, this excludes:
-
seeds
-
dormant organisms
-
suspended memory
-
archived traces
These do not exhibit continuous change,
yet they are not lost.
3. Introduction of Latency
We introduce a second mode:
∂(ΔZ) = 0 but not null
That is:
-
no active variation
-
no disappearance
👉 difference is preserved without change
4. Redefinition of ψ
ψ is redefined as:
ψ = persistence ∪ latency
Thus:
-
persistence → active continuation
-
latency → suspended continuation
5. Unified Interpretation
Both modes share the same structure:
👉 difference is sustained
The distinction lies only in manifestation:
-
persistence → visible change
-
latency → hidden preservation
6. Temporal Consequence
Time remains defined as:
time = persistence(lag)
Latency does not generate time directly.
However:
👉 it preserves the condition for time
Thus:
latency is the suspended condition of temporal possibility.
7. Internal and External Correspondence
This structure appears in both domains:
Biological ψ
-
persistence → activity
-
latency → dormancy
Social ψ
-
persistence → maintenance
-
latency → residual trace
Thus:
internal latency ↔ external residual
8. Structural Implication
Persistence and latency are not opposites.
They are:
👉 two phases of the same syntax
Thus:
ψ is not only what continues,
but also what waits.
9. Repositioning Temporal Syntax
We now state:
Time emerges when difference persists.
Possibility remains when difference is held.
Conclusion
The definition of time remains:
time = persistence(lag)
But ψ is completed as:
ψ = persistence ∪ latency
Thus:
👉 not all persistence is active
some persistence waits
