The Mirror Universe
— Between Physics and Phenomenology
Orientation is not given by the universe.
The universe appears through orientation.宇宙に向きはない。
向きが宇宙をつくるのだ。
It is often said that a mirror reverses left and right.
In fact, a mirror does no such thing.
What a mirror reverses is front and back.
A mirror reflects space by reversing only the direction perpendicular to its surface.
This direction is not left–right, but the front–back axis between the observer and the mirror.
Yet we tend to interpret the reflection as a reversal of left and right.
This confusion arises from the way human beings experience space.
Space first appears as front and back.
Front and back express the direction of events.
To move, to arrive, to fall.
Within this orientation, time and causality are already implied.
Front and back mark the direction in which events unfold.
The next orientation that emerges is up and down.
But the universe itself has no up or down.
Up and down exist only on the ground.
The ground is the place where falling is supported.
Objects fall under gravity.
When this falling is supported, we call the place “the ground.”
The center of the Earth is not “down.”
It is merely the point toward which relations of falling converge.
The Earth’s core does not create up and down.
It simply supports the front–back relation of falling.
Observers standing on the ground experience this relation of support as up and down.
From a cosmic perspective, however, there is no such direction.
There is only the relation between falling and support.
The final orientation to appear is left and right.
Left and right are not directions of the universe.
They arise from the symmetry of the body.
This difference becomes visible in the way beings walk.
Humans walk by looking right, then left, and then forward.
Dogs do not.
Dogs simply walk forward.
For them, the direction that matters is the direction of movement.
Left and right play only a minor role.
The habit of checking left and right before moving forward is largely characteristic of Homo sapiens.
What about AI?
AI has no front and back.
It does not walk.
It does not fall.
Therefore it has no up or down.
And certainly no left or right.
For AI, space is simply an arrangement without orientation.
Human space is structured by front–back, up–down, and left–right.
A dog’s space is structured primarily by front and back.
AI’s space has no direction at all.
The problem of mirror images emerges between these worlds.
The universe has no left or right.
Nor does it have up or down.
There is only the relation between falling and support.
Only observers standing on the ground experience these relations as directions.
The mirror quietly reveals this fact.
A mirror image is the most familiar form of cosmology:
the universe of falling, seen from the ground.

鏡は左右を反転している、とよく言われる。
しかし実際には、鏡は左右を反転していない。
鏡が反転しているのは前後である。
鏡は鏡面に垂直な方向だけを反転する。
それは左右ではなく、観測者と鏡のあいだの前後方向である。
にもかかわらず、私たちはそれを左右の反転として理解してしまう。
この錯覚は、人間がどのように空間を経験しているかに関係している。
空間はまず 前後として立ち上がる。
前後とは出来事の方向である。

この落下が支えられるとき、私たちはそこを地面と呼ぶ。
地球の中心は「下」ではない。
それは落下の関係が収束する点である。
Earth Core は上下を作っているのではない。
それは 前後の落下を支えている。
地上に立つ観測者は、この支えの関係を上下として経験する。
しかし宇宙的に見れば、それは上下ではない。
それはただ、落下と支えの関係である。
最後に現れるのが 左右である。
左右は宇宙の方向ではない。
それは身体の対称性から生まれる局所的な方向である。
この違いは歩行にも現れる。
人間は歩くとき、右を見て、左を見て、前を見る。
しかし犬は前を見て歩く。
犬にとって重要なのは進行方向であり、左右は補助的な感覚にすぎない。
左右を確認してから前に進むという歩行様式は、ほとんどホモ・サピエンス特有のものである。
ではAIはどうか。
AIには前後がない。
AIは歩かない。
落下もしない。
したがってAIには上下もない。
もちろん左右もない。
AIにとって空間とは、方向を持たない配置である。
人間の空間は前後・上下・左右から構成される。
犬の空間は主に前後で構成される。
AIの空間には方向そのものが存在しない。
鏡像の問題は、この三つの世界のあいだに生まれる。
宇宙には左右はない。
上下もない。
あるのは落下と支えの関係だけである。
地上に立つ観測者だけが、その関係を方向として経験する。
鏡はそのことを静かに示している。
鏡像とは、落下する宇宙を地上から見たときに現れる、もっとも身近な宇宙論なのである。
